OBD I code 2-4-1 EGR 700

My car just gave me that code too, about a week ago. Happened just after startup one day. This had also happened a couple years ago when I first got the car. But in both cases, mine stayed off after I erased them using the diagnostic box.

When I had my engine apart, I had pulled the exhaust crossover pipe right out. It is a metal pipe, about 1/2" in diameter, that connects the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve under the intake manifold. You need a set of metric flare nut wrenches (fairly big sizes too, but nothing out of the ordinary) to get it out. Look at the back of your exhaust manifold, close to the firewall and you'll find it. Undo both ends and pull the pipe out. Mine had tons of sooty carbon buildup inside, but some blasts of compressed air from both ends and a few shots of brake cleaner and other chemicals more or less cleared it out. I believe that could be your problem - carbon restricting exhaust gas flow back into the intake. You could also pull the egr valve out and clean it too. I think the FAQ has a section on that. GL.
