Ah!
Your problem is either the sender or connector in the rear end, or a problem with the instrument cluster or speedometer itself. If the latter, read up on the FAQ:

Check that the solder joints are OK on the circuit board.
Our '91 740 had leaky capacitor syndrome. It was fairly painless to swap the guts from a spare speedo.
