A friend with a 1990 745 was scheduled to have the rack replaced today before leaving on a long distance (mostly interstate) 1500 miles round trip on Thursday. The mechanic took the rack out of the box and declared it to be defective in its rebuild. He is unable to source one in time to do the swap before Thursday.
He really needs to make the trip with what turns out to be a leaking rack. I do not know the extent of the flow but I suggested he can probably keep up with the loss of fluid by periodic checking along the way.
I really don't know if leaking seals can blow out or get so bad in a short time that it would not be feasible to keep adding fluid during a trip. However, if that should be the case would it be reasonable to assume that he could simply remove the power steering belt and man handle the wagon without the power assist in order to not burn up the power steering pump?
