Checking brake hoses 700

I'm going to be changing my pads and rotors and thought I would check my brake hoses while I'm at it. I'm unaware of any problem, but after 20 years, they may be due.

So, to check them, does one have an assistant apply the brakes, then feel the hoses by hand, observe them visually, or something else? I assume any bulge felt means a replacement is recommended.
