I believe the rubber is just external protection for some type of flexible inner tubing that actually carries the fluid.

I've only seen one (1) swollen brake line. That was on a 240 front, and only noticeable on close inspection while someone pressed the pedal down.

Apparently the inner tubing had a leak, but the outer rubber was containing it with no seepage, just "ballooning" under pressure.
