I have never had starter trouble so can't comment on that but I have upgraded to electronic ignition and that made a noticable improvement to starting performance. The system I installed is a British aftermarket system called a Mobelec Magnum. I picked it up a few years ago at a swap meet. I had to precision machine a new plastic boss with 4 steel inserts to suit the distributor (the boss that came with it was for a V8) but other than that the installation was pretty straight forward. The brains screwed onto the inner guard and I replaced the points with a special hall effect sensor. Two wires from the sensor to the brains, connect power and earth and one wire to the coil.
The other upgrade (I have yet to do) that you might consider is to fit an electric fuel pump in parallel with the mechanical one (or instead of). If your car sits for a while between runs and your carbs are tired and leaky, the engine will need to crank a few revs to get fuel through before it will start. With an electric fuel pump the carbs will be full before you start cranking.
