Is this a really bad problem? 200 1980

In our case the oil pressure diminished rapidly when the gear milled a postage-stamp-sized
hole in the pump case.
I imagine you would see aluminum residue in the oil filter, at least as long as the pump worked.
It pays to pay attention to a loss in oil pressure!

Another point: Magnetically soft materials are used as insulators from magnetic fields.
Therefore a magnet on the OUTSIDE of a soft steel oil filter can would be MUCH LESS effective
than a magnet inside it!
