Safe to Change Tranny Fluid?

What you describe sounds like a worn, loose universal joint, never heard of a tranny doing what you describe. In any event I would perform a flush, that changes all the fluid, about 9 to 11 qts. Never heard that changing/flushing would cause a problem. Dark fluid indicates neglect, not water.
