Safe to Change Tranny Fluid?

I'd say it's unsafe (for the longevity of the auto trans) NOT to change the trans fluid.

ATF is a lubricant/cooling agent just like the oil inside the engine. It needs to be changed when it needs to be changed. Dark coloured burnt smelling ATF means that the fluid is not lubricating the mechanics of the auto trans very well.

I'd change the ATF on an annual basis for a daily driven car.
