Art is the one who posted the Harbor Freight 15/16" offset. That's good to have, but not the issue as you described it – needing to counterhold the piston shaft.
I posted on the availability of a unique tool kit made expressly to counterhold the shaft while loosening (and tightening) the top nut. BTW, that's not the "gland" nut. The gland nut is the big one that screws down on the strut tube threads to hold the the strut cartridge in place.
