WRT to sanctioned racing, the first question would be... have you perused the rulebook? It's dependent upon the various class/category rulesets of course, but in many (actually, most) cases, you are not allowed to replace the stock steering box.
For that matter, you may have a bigger issue; I don't think the 122 is currently classified at all with SCCA, unless you're talking Solo II (autocross) only. Insofar as wheel-to-wheel racing is concerned, many of the vintage racing organizations have it classed, but not SCCA.
