Engine assembly, tips? 120-130

Most of what's in that very old article is probably still valid, but I know I do a few things differently now...

Paper gaskets go on using aircraft grade sealant, which comes in a jar with a brush built into the cap. I haven't seen Yamabond in years, and Hylomar is pretty hard to find and expensive. Those would be the seals for the rear main seal housing, timing cover (unless it's a thick cork one), water pump, and fuel pump. No sealant on the pan, head or manifold gaskets.

Loc-Tite blue (and only blue) on the cam retainer bolts, rear main seal housing bolts, and the threads on the nose of the cam. Tighten the big cam nut to 75 ft. lbs. only, not 100.

I use 30W motor oil on all the bearing shells, wrist pin bushings, rocker bushings, and the sides of the lifters. Cam lobes and the flat bottoms of the lifters need a special lube made for that purpose (there are many brands -- I use Schneider Racing Cams "Formula One." Assembly lube on the pushrod ends, and I use a mix of assembly lube and motor oil on the timing gears.

Before assembling anything, oil the lifters and check that they all drop through their bores with minimum pressure (you can use one lifter to check them all). Check that the oil pump drive shaft turns freely in its bushing.

Install the cam first and put the timing gear on it (don't forget the spacer ring!). Put the timing gear on the crank (if it's not already), and install the crank next. This is the easiest way to line up the timing marks on the gears. Note that with the marks together, that's TDC on the compression stroke on #4 cylinder -- you need to turn the crank 360 degrees from that when you orient the distributor drive gear later. Haynes doesn't mention that, and I be I didn't either.

Install the timing cover and rear main seal housing before you put the pan on, or they won't center correctly around the crank. If you're using the original type felt seals, those go on after the covers are in place. Be sure you have an even gap between the cover / housing and the crank all the way around. Soak the felt in oil before installing.

Install the water pump before the head goes on.
