Depending on how your replacement pump is equipped, you may not need to unscrew the nuts holding the wiring terminals on the pump. Some of the replacements don't have the threaded terminals, but rather have solder lugs. If it does, you can just cut the old wires off very near the terminals.
Edit: Both of the Bosch in-tank pumps I've replaced had the screw terminals, but the only Rex/Regina replacement pump I've done had the solder lugs. It may only be the Rex/Regina replacement pumps that have the solder lugs. In any case, you can unscrew the nuts. Just do it with the sender/pump unit fully out of the tank. FWIW, I work on the sender/pump unit with the car outside, all windows, sunroof, and tailgate open, folding back seat down, and 2 box fans just inside the (open) back doors blowing towards the tailgate. Makes it much better to work on, far less fumes to breathe.
