I once added an aftermarket (JC Whitney) adjustable delay switch to my 72 144. I still had the orignal OFF-HI-LOW switch to control the speed and added in the delay switch (rotary knob) along with it. As I recall it took some trial and error to get the wiring correct, but in the end it worked great. I didn't need to get into the motor at all.
