Not sure what you mean by "tractor like" ? I don't understand why a D cam would be more perky as The B cam was for the sport engine? I do have a B20 out of my Dad's old 1975 240, not sure what cam it has, I do know the comp. ratio is only 8.7/1.
I also have a B20B head, I believe it is 9.5/1 ratio.
If you are using your 40's on a B20 bored to a B21 it seems that they would be more than addequate on a B18.
