Everyone, including me, will direct you to the 740 FAQ's for detailed troubleshooting info. You give few details about the activity when it does not start so it is hard to start diagnosing.

That said, I had a 1990 760 turbo and it had the following issues:

FPR was bad...usually does not affect starting
Power stage was bad...could affect starting but usually fails when hot
RSR going bad...normally fails when hot, but might not

In truth, you need to isolate fuel, ignition or compression as the culprit. If it will always start with starting fluid than it is most likely fuel. The FAQ's are extensive in their troubleshooting in this area.
