That's a good test. Same one being used in the troubleshooting chart, but made easier to understand.
The only caveat I see, is the sprinkling of "12v" throughout. I'm not absolutely sure, not owning the 88 model, but I believe the voltage used by the Hall effect sensor is 5 volts, provided by the ICU. The factory manual chart alludes to that as well. Other than perhaps 5v instead of 12v, all works the same as you've posted.
Bentley (p280-9) has a much better view of the end of the distributor cable, shown with the wire bail at the top, and the two leftmost terminals marked as the one to short with a jumper.
