Pulling the connector from the MAF/AMM with the engine running may cause problems, it should be pulled with the engine off.

Pulling it should have triggered the light, I know starting mine the other day with it off sure set a light.

If your car smoothed out with it off, I think your AMM is bad.

I would have to agree with all points here.
