It's generally not at the connector but rather it is frayed insulation down by the sensor.
If you have a 12" 3/8th extension, a swivel joint and a 10mm socket (better yet, A swivel socket), you should be able to replace the sensor. If you don't want to buy the $35 sensor first, do a trial run, try to get the old one out. Mine came out very easily on my '89. You have an added obstacle with the AC canister back there getting in the way that I don't have on my '89.
