It isn't a rust issue in the road salt sense. The water gets in through the broken sheath and follows the wires into the sensor, where it migrates from the encapsulated coil to the magnetic core. When that rusts, it swells the whole sensor and locks it in place within the alloy bracket. That's why it is important to replace the sensor now even if the short appears to be at the connector end. Wait too long, and the job will be worse.
