Alternator 72 142E 140-160

Regardless of the brand of alternator, your symptom indicates that the alternator is being forced to self-excite. A burned out amp light or disconnected (or broken) exciter wire will cause this (as will an internal failure within the alternator, though I'd check the light and wire first).
