You have a good memory. That's just the way they worked in the 50's and 60's, when the flashers were heated bimetal strips with contacts.
Those solid state ones in the highly electronic 240 model* have a custom chip inside. It makes it flash fast for both high and low current. So, its not quite so easy to know which it is without getting out of the car and taking a look at both front and rear lamps.
