Your solution sounds better than what I used for a 244 tail light problem. The little "jaws" inside the connector that bite onto the copper contacts are removable. Note: only work on one at a time.

I removed one jaw (needle-nose pliers) and tightened the bite just a little. I found that too much prevents easy plug-on. Worked OK except for the connections where the copper was burned too badly.

Those were often the back-up lights and fog lights, where I used another work-around. On those lights, the left connecting plug bites onto a double-width copper part. The adjoining jaw that bites onto the same wide copper feeds a jumper that takes the power over the the right side light. By swapping the jaw positions, I got the left light that worked every time and the right one sometimes. Did OK for my needs.

For a better right side feed one could make a piggy-back connector to tie the right side feed into the left side wire ahead of where it connects to the jaw.

The initial design is pretty good: Efficient use of materials and ease of assembly. Just not OK for the 12th through 30th year of the life of the car!!
