When I pulled the head on my 66 B18 it was in response to a clattering sound while running. This was the result of a piece of broken compression ring becoming lodged on the edge of a piston and grenading into bits. The cylinder was deeply scored.
Further investigation revealed that compression rings were also broken on the other three pistons with no scoring and reasonable performance but with notable oil consumption.
I hope this issue is nothing so serious for you but I am happy with my rebuilt engine now that the financial and emotional pain has lessened.
