I wondered too. You'd have to have the lash w-a-y too tight to burn exhaust valves. One thought is that they may have receded into the head, which can make the lash tighter to the point where there really isn't any.

Valve damage from detonation is typically pie-shaped wedges broken out of the exhaust valves. That may not have happened at all in your case.
