It's Labor Day here in the USA, so a good time to be lazy!
I did a quick check this morning and what I found is a bit surprising to me. I grabbed a front wheel and turned it ever so lightly, the steering wheel moved in both directions without any 'play'. Really interesting.
I then opened the hood, grabbed the shaft at the break off point and turned it. There was the inch of play. In the steering box.
I haven't looked inside the box yet. 80W or its equivilent is not on my garage floor and the stores are closed today. But I will pop the plastic cover off and take a look at the oil level, if there is any.
The steering box is probably as old as the car, about 295K miles. There are no 120s in the local salvage yards.
I guess what brought this problem to a head is having two matching tires on the front of the car. Plus the fact that I am used to rack&pinion on the other cars.
I don't know what the 'screw' adjustment is for on the steering box, and I am reluctant to turning it without knowledge.
