an inch of play is nothing. I bet you have more than an inch.
And I bet it's the rubber coupling in the column near the distributor.
Messing with steering box adjustment is absolutely last resort. The bushing is number one. Tie rods number two.
If hte bushing is good, and you don't know how to check the front end components, take it to a reputable alignment shop and have them take a look for you. Chances are, they'll do it for free in hopes that you'll come back for an alignment when you get everything fixed up.
