I agree! Sounds like brake rotors, but it is pretty easy to crawl under the car and take a look at the tie rods, too. Jack it up and take a look! Also, while the front end is in the air, grab the tire/wheel and see if you can shake it from side to side. Take a look at all of the "boots" tie rod ends, ball joints, etc.
As has been said, a "pickle fork" makes the job pretty easy, but like anything on these old girls, things get sticky. Take your time and all will come apart...
