140 / 164 clock 140-160

My 142 has the older style VDO clock as shown here (the clock on the right in the upper image):
http://www.volvosolutions.com/1800inst_clk_VDO.html

It doesn't work, and it's my understanding that the clocks often fail due to a blown thermal fuse. After removing the two nuts from the bolts sticking out of the back, the casing won't budge. I think a grey disk on the back of the casing is the culprit.

Unless I'm doing it wrong. Any ideas? The clock is uber-clean and it would be awesome if it worked.

FYI, I did check the power and ground cables going to the clock and they are fine.
