There is a seal (it looks like a hockey puck) that sits on the back of the head right up against the firewall. Does it look like the oil poured out from the back (rear) end of the engine. That's about the only place where it would lose so much oil, so fast! It sounds like that seal popped out. You might even be able to feel if it's missing (put on some plastic gloves just to avoid the oily mess).
Many of us have put a retainer (a strap of metal) over the seal to prevent such a problem, which, by the way, almost always occurs because there's too much pressure in the engine from a poorly maintained flame trap [a trivial maintenance item that's often overlooked]. The main thing is, that seal is easy and inexpensive to replace by a mechanic, if he's honest.
Often, though, tow truck garages are in the business to fleece their victims, so I hope your boyfriend shows up soon.
