Thanks to all for your help.
Ok, I ordered the following which should allow me to install the mat buttons:
snap fastener tool
http://www.sailrite.com/Snap-Fastener-Installation-Tool
1/8th inch hole cutter
http://www.sailrite.com/Hole-Cutter-1-8_2
There are even educational videos on how to install on these webpages.
Who knew it would take so much effort? :)
