Upgrading the radio

Not necessary to run new wires to the speakers.

Your external amp has two plugs - one brings the speaker input to the amp, the other takes the output to the speakers. With the adapter setup, you simply unplug the oblong speaker output from the amp, and plug it into the plug end of the adapter harness. You can leave the amp in place.

The factory radio has two plug outs - a round DIN plug that runs to the amp, and an oblong connector that serves all of the radio functions, e.g., bring power and ground in, connecting to the power antenna, etc. Hillbilly gave a good explanation in his post on your other thread.

There are two adapter harnesses in the kit, one for the speaker wires, one for the other functions. You simply splice/crimp the wire ends of the new radio harness with the wire ends of the two adpater harnesses, then plug one connecter end to the existing Volvo harness, and the other to the speaker plug you removed from the amp. The wires on the adapters are of sufficient length so you don't have to add any wire. I used crimped shielded spade/lug sets to make the connections because I thought it was more secure and less bulky than solder/tape.

A couple of advantages to the adapter setup. The first is that the splice/crimp can be done at the work bench, not bent over and cramped behind the dash. The second is that both the new radio harness wires and the adapter wires are flagged with their respective functions - no guesswork about which wire goes to which speaker, or which is the always hot or switched hot power source. Just follow the excellent illustrated directions. The third is that if you ever want to sell the car but keep the radio, you can easily re-install the factory radio, becuase you haven't cut any wires.

If your Alpine has IPOD capability, you can get a cable that runs from the back of the radio to the IPOD. In my 240, I snaked it down from the radio hole to the cubby at the bottom of the stack, through a hole I punched in the fiber box. The IPOD was stashed deep in the cubby, easily accessible, but out of the view of the casual gadget thief. These are great, because the IPOD screens play right on the Alpine's display.
