The connector from the ignition switch to the starter slides onto the starter. (the small wire) If it was a little loose, all of the commotion may have caused it to slip off. Easy fix. It doesn't explain the smoke, though.
If you test the starter solenoid, as described here, be sure the car is not in gear! Sounds silly, but I've done it!
