You assumed teh Mounting of the Lights would ground it and then you ran the Positive side of the battery to a switch and then from the other side of the switch to the lights?? Is that how you ran it?
This should work providing the switchand wire that you used are beafy enough to handle the Current of the Lights.

You could try temporarily running a wire from the ground side of the battery to the Case of the Lights just to make sure you are properly grounded
