Alternator question: 142 140-160

Yes that voltage is cause for concern if it is actually that high.
If there is an automotive electrical rebuilder near you check with them. The regulators all work the same. I've used off shore ( Chinese made ) regulators without trouble ( they make your iPhone after all) ......Last one I bought was $17.00 and it's still working fine. Bosch prices are insane. You'll have to splice it in, but it will produce the correct voltage.
The shop I used converted a marine alternator to internal regulator for me for $45.00, and it's still working - I have to trust it as it's on my boat. And sold me a large frame truck alternator of 150 amps continuous output, Leece-Neville brand, USA made, brand new, for $200.00 Canadian. So the Bosch prices are, realistically, insane.
