I have an idea. Is the fuel pump original?
Either way, it may be going bad, but not there yet. To check its condition (or at least check for obvious major issues), jumper the fuses and get under the car so you can feel the fuel pump itself. Put a hand on it and get your head close to it. It should make a fairly quiet whine/buzz. If it sounds like a hornet's nest or is groaning, whining loudly, or vibrating/thumping under your hand, the pump is on its way out.
However, usually a pump in this condition is on its way out. You can also pull the fuel return line off of the fuel rail (after releasing fuel line pressure by running the car with the two fuses removed) and check the flow from the fuel pump that way. Be careful - you should be getting a LOT of gas out, and you'll need a container to catch it in and a person to turn the pumps on and off, either by cranking or by jumpering the fuses.
The other thing nobody's mentioned is the Hall sensor - which I think was used in LH2.2. Check the wiring to it, and if there's clearance near it, you can run a ferrous (feeler gauges work well) object through the slot with the key on, and it should result in the fuel pumps cycling briefly on, then off.
