Quick test for 12V from Ignition switch 700 1990

I've had similar problems with my 1990 Regina. I replaced ignition switch and neutral safety switch, but still sometimes get no crank. I finally wired a lead from the battery to the starter, with a push button in between, mounted to the dash. Now when I get no start with the key, I turn key to on position, push button and starter engages. Been running like this for about 2 years.
