Some other motors I ponder sticking in an old Volvo (like my PV) at times:
Honda S2000 motor - 2.0L, 240 HP, 9000 rpm redline. With a super slick shifting 6 speed manual trans. It's like a very high dollar race engine. It's criticized for favoring HP over torque, but I think it still has more torque than a B20 does, just twice the HP.
VW TDI - 1.8L, 90 HP in the older stock form, but easily tweakable up to 140 - 170 hp levels. Ridiculous amounts of torque. And it can haul a 3400 lb VW around and get 45 mpg, what could it do in a 2400 lb old Volvo? Adapters are available to mate it up to a RWD Toyota trans for use in a RWD vehicle.
