Clutch question 444-544 1958

I believe I have found the problem. The previous owner had placed some extra nuts in front of the adjuster nut. These acted to push the fork a little more against the pressure plate. I had neglected to put these back. So my question now is how much more movement is there supposed to be once the release bearing makes contact with the pressure plate. I think right now, I have it so the pedal is about halfway down when the pressure plate is contacted.
