That's a very good point and a very good reminder, George...
A 122 will run fine for a long, long time on a battery that is discharged. A 240 with electric fuel pump, computers, injectors, stereo, wipers at times, etc.. will get you 300 miles on a battery with no charging system (trust me, I know).
Scratch the electric fuel pump, computers, all that stuff.. you're left with a coil. Could probably run a 122 for weeks without knowing there's a problem.
The lights get brighter when you rev the engine.
Check the belt. It really could be so simple as a loose fan belt.
What is the behavior of the amp light?
