button on shifter (automatic) 200 1993

I would like to know if I am using the button on the shifter properly and also if it is worth getting it fixed. I have a '91 sedan with cruise control that loses power and speed on the highway when going up hills. But if I click the button on the shifter and the up arrow light comes on, I am able to maintain speed on hills when using cruise control or not. I also heard that having the up arrow light on when driving at highway speed will save gas. I usually use it for these two purposes, and can hear and feel it engaging if I push the button when going above 40 mph and letting off the gas pedal as I push the button. I also have a '93 wagon but when I push the button in that car the light does not come on and I do not hear or feel any change. However, if I just push the gas pedal all the way to the floor, it seems like it engages whatever gear the button usually engages. The same thing will happen if I push the gas pedal all the way to the floor in the sedan. But anyway, the button (overdrive?) does not seem to be working in the wagon and I want to know if it is worth trying to repair it and what its real purpose is. Thanks
