You are understanding it backwards. Assume you have a 3speed with OD. As you start out, it will shift 1,2,3, then OD. When you push the pedal down, it will drop out of OD into 3 like what people use to call a "passing gear". If you arrow is lit, you are NOT in OD. Less engine rpms in OD to gain mpg.
