Best way to clean an engine?

What's the best way to clean my engine?

Any advice about which electrical components need to be wrapped up to avoid moisture?

Is it a bad idea to have my engine steam cleaned? Or are those who do this experienced enough that they know how to protect vulnerable electrical boxes from moisture?

I suppose there actually isn't really any major reason to want to clean it, other than a preference to be able to look into the compartment and have it look clean and tidy.

Should I restrain myself and live with a "sorta dirty" engine? I don't have a lot of oil leaks or anything unusual.
