Jumpy Speedometer FIXED 700 1989

Thanks!!

I went to the connector FIRST because of your "Heads-Up" and found exactly what you had. That saved a a lot of time.

Like SO MUCH of Volvo wiring, the insulation on the wires had crumbled to dust and the copper wire inside had also corroded to dust (though in my case the car is quite corrosion free), and when I touched the wire, it broke.

For anyone encountering same, I removed the sealed wire holding the plug onto the speed sensor, but could not remove the plug due to the Panhard Rod being in the way. I used a 17mm socket to drop the right side of the Panhard Rod to the ground so I could get my hand up to withdraw the speedo sensor plug upward and out.

I chose to cut the twisted pair (twisted to reduce losses and inhibit induction of interference), and brought the plug to a convenient workplace. I snapped the plug open, and withdrew the inner connectors and withdrew the copper contacts from their insulated sheaths and soldered on new wires, then re-assembled the connector. I then re-installed the plug (w/o the sealed locking wire since I am not concerned anyone will drive the car with it disconnected to cheat on mileage accumulation), and used crimp-on butt connectors to re-establish electric continuity.

Below is a photo link showing the repair before wrapping it with electrical tape. I could have soldered the wires, and used heat-shrink tubing to make the repair invisible, but I really didn't care to take the extra time and trouble.
