I don't want to cast dispersions here, but having been in the tire business a lot of years, I will opine that 95% (or more) of all such "blowouts", including tires older than 7 or 8 years, are the direct result of running the tire seriously underinflated. There are exceptions, of course... the infamous Firestone 500 steel belted radial passenger tire of the 1970's comes to mind. Those tires either had a serious design defect, or the world's worst quality control, or both. :(
