In your place, I would check it out. Last ball joints I got (aftermarket but not Uro) surprised me installing the lock nut. In the past, a cleaning with solvent was all I needed to get good traction, but these I needed to clamp.
Check if that's the problem by levering the joint away from the strut while the wheel is off of the ground. Or measure between them with the wheels on the ground if you have another car to compare. If still unsure, I would pull one and compare measurements with the old parts. Trust your instincts on that boot not covering.
