For best results, before doing the adjustment you should make sure you have no vaccuum leaks, clean the throttle body and reinstall with a new gasket, warm up the engine and check/set the ignition timing to spec.
There's other stuff to do on newer models but that should cover the '76.
When you make the adjustment make sure the car is warmed up. Like run it for five minutes or more after the thermostat opens.
Let me know if I am wrong about your car not having an oxygen sensor (see my other reply). If your car does have the Lambda system you can do an accurate setting with a duty cycle meter or a dwell meter.
