Up here in stinking creek at flood stage it would be the special flexible silicone-insulated cable leading from the differential's magnetic pickup to the car body to be suspect, and not the sender itself, as replacement of anything you have not replaced before is most likely a hellacious task and best left to shysters who learned the trade in the free love era.

So, things haven't changed much. Though the 90-day shot of lube won't apply, it is still the cable's fault:
