Agreed.

I've tracked the car readout compared to actual fuel economy on a 1996 Dodge Caravan, a 2005 Nissan Altima, and my 2010 XC60. On the highway they are closer to the true reading but still high. In mixed urban driving they are solidly optimistic. Of course, the XC60 is the most accurate.... :-)
