Ok, caution is definitely warranted. I'd like to try some of the self diagnosing ideas suggested here before taking her in, but do you think that a day or two of trying risks catastrophic failure (based on what we know here)?

Also, I have never replaced a head gasket. It is regularly talked about as THE big job in automotive mechanics, but how bad/hard is it, really?
